How to Use Your Electronic Trailer Brake Controller

September 12th, 2019 by

Your RAM truck is equipped with countless smart systems to make it easier and safer for you to get the job done. If you’re towing, one of the most important tools at your disposal is the Electronic Trailer Brake Controller.

The Electronic Trailer Brake Controller is one of those tools. When you’re towing, it tells the brakes on the trailer how to respond when you hit the brake pedal in your RAM truck. That allows you to tailor the brake sensitivity on the trailer you’re towing to keep things safe.

How to Set Electronic Trailer Brake Controller

On a RAM HD truck, the Electronic Trailer Brake Controller is located to the bottom-left of your in-dash touchscreen. It gives you two options for how to engage the brakes: You can set the brake gain automatically using the “+” and “-” buttons, and the gain level will display on the screen.

You can also manually engage the trailer brakes by pressing together the two sliding paddles located below the “=” and “-” buttons.

To determine the proper level of gain you’ll need, you’ll have to test your truck and trailer in a safe, flat area away from traffic. Start at 50% gain and bring your vehicle and trailer to a stop from a low speed (say, 20mph) to feel if the trailer brakes lock up or fail to engage quickly enough. From there, you’ll need to adjust until the Electronic Trailer Brake Controller accordingly.
